The insurance people declined my claim because it wasn’t parked behind a locked door. My fault that I didn’t read the terms properly.

    Insurance is a scam.

It’s literally betting against yourself, while knowing the dealer doesn’t pay out 9/10 times even when you win.

Insurance is a good bet for things where the cost of a loss would be a big deal. I put fire insurance on my house because if my house would burn I couldn’t afford to replace it. Because I can bet my house won’t burn down I dare live in a nice house. Without that insurance I’d have to live in a mud hut (or maybe a step above).

Well that’s obviously the reality of it, I’m exaggerating.

In Finland every car has to have basic traffic insurance. If it doesn’t and you hit someone and maim/kill them, you won’t’ be covered. So yeah, I understand that for some things it’s essential, but that’s only as long as the system is at least in some way reliable.

If actually 9/10 cases insurance didn’t pay out when something was actually obviously covered by an insurance, then I don’t think many people would bother.

I’m just exaggerating but we all know what scumbags insurances companies are. Some less than others.

You basically need 2 bikes if you’re a cyclist:

A clean and modern bike you ride for pleasure or between secure locations.

And a beat up clunker that is disposable and/or looks unappetising to thieves that you can leave in public spaces.

When I was a kid, I got into a scuffle with a group of kids on our bikes. I managed to evade them, but they kept looking for me around town over the next week or so.

I went to the city pool and locked up my bike. I was a poor farm kid, so I did not have a fancy bike lock… I had like 12 feet of chain my dad used on his tractor and a huge padlock from an old barn door. I had so much chain I basically wrapped up my bike.

The other kids found my bike and tried to steal my wheels and handle bars but they were all chained up. The only thing they got were my grips. Luckily I had wrenches with my to put my bike back together.

Almost looks like there was already one bike or something locked into the same fence that’s also stripped clean.
