We don’t absorb everything completely, so some passes through unabsorbed. Some are passed via bile or mucous production, like manganese, copper, and zinc. Others are passed via urine. Some are passed via sweat. Selenium, when experiencing selenium toxicity, will even pass through your breath.

Other than the last one, most of those eventually end up going down the drain, either in the toilet, down the shower drain, or when we do our laundry. Though some portion ends up as dust.

And to be thorough, there’s also bleeding as a pathway to losing nutrients, as well as injuries (or surgeries) involving losing flesh, tears, spit/boogers, hair loss, lactation, finger nail and skin loss, reproductive fluids, blistering, and mensturation. And corpse disposal, though the amount of nutrients we shed throughout our lives dwarfs what’s left at the end.

I think each one of those are ones that, due to our way of life and how it’s changed since our hunter gatherer days, less of it ends up back in the nutrient cycle.

Even if the soil is preserved, we’ve been mining the micronutrients from it and generally only replacing the 3 main macros for centuries. It’s one of the reasons why mass produced produce doesn’t taste as good as home grown or wild food. Nutritional value keeps going down because each time food is harvested and shipped away to be consumed and then shat out into a septic tank or waste processing facility, it doesn’t end up back in the soil as a part of nutrient cycles like it did when everything was wilder. Similar story for meat eating nutrients in a pasture.

Insects did contribute to the cycle, since they still shit and die everywhere, but their numbers are dropping rapidly, too.

At some point, I think we’re going to have to mine the sea floor for nutrients and ship that to farms for any food to be more nutritious than junk food. Salmon farms set up in ways that block wild salmon from making it back inland doesn’t help balance out all of the nutrients that get washed out to sea all the time, too.

It’s like humanity is specifically trying to speedrun extiction by ignoring and taking for granted how things work that we depend on.

Not to mention that even when some components do shrink, it’s not uniform for all components on the chip, so they can’t just do 1:1 layout shrinks like in the past, but pretty much need to start the physical design portion all over with a new layout and timings (which then cascade out into many other required changes).

Porting to a new process node (even at the same foundry company) isn’t quite as much work as a new project, but it’s close.

Same thing applies to changing to a new foundry company, for all of those wondering why chip designers don’t just switch some production from TSMC to Samsung or Intel since TSMC’s production is sold out. It’s almost as much work as just making a new chip, plus performance and efficiency would be very different depending in where the chip was made.

Yes, but they used it because their parents wouldn’t get them a scientific calculator. At least that’s the impression I got.

It’s not impossible that it might even spit out other prompts that were a part of its training data. Or joke prompts from chat logs it trained on.

Though I’d be very surprised if it actually is handled in a neutral way. Though, on the other hand, previous chat bots did turn racist pretty quickly in the past, so I could see him letting it remain neutral, knowing that it will spit out that kind of shit if allowed to, and avoiding an explicit right wing bias could give it credibility outside of the far right.

They said “scientific” calculator, not “graphing”. As in their parents weren’t willing to spend that $20 (or less) for what I’d consider the most basic useful calculator.

Though it makes me wonder why they don’t use actual wings to maintain control over the boat when it goes too far out of the water. Why isn’t the ideal basically a plane that has a propeller sticking down into the water?

Phone security should be such that nothing can connect or do anything on the phone unless the user allows access. Even for maintenance purposes, it should involve a physical key or something so that charging isn’t potentially giving access to anything on the phone. And have the phone pop up a notification when a connected device tries, so that this can be confirmed. Maybe even have phones give access to a sandbox to see what connected devices are specifically after.

Though I do wonder if the average user would care if they plug their phone in their car and it tells them their car is trying to access their contacts, messages, and browser data. There’s probably a non-trivial amount that would respond by trying to give access because it must need that for a reason.

Do you use an add-on to prevent that from wiping out all but one window’s worth of tabs when you close them? That’s what originally made me get a tab grouping addon, after losing a ton of tabs when I broke some out into their own window and then later closed the main tab window before the secondary one. Realized immediately what happened but it was already too late to save that entire generation of precious tabs. Who knows what articles I didn’t feel like reading at the time but was totally going to read later I lost forever.

Is that method different from using the hot keys to swap layouts? Like can I tell it to always use that mapping for that game or do I need to remember to run it each time I play the game and then set it back after I’m done (or automate that)?

If you drive around fast enough, you might make one.

Actually, there is one thing that is an annoyance that I haven’t been able to resolve. I use dvorak as my main layout.

Sometimes games get the keyboard right and keys are remapped to qwerty layout (and typing still uses dvorak). This case works better than on windows, since playing a game there either required the game itself to recognize keyboard layouts (best case), or remapping the controls (annoying case), or switching to qwerty (frustrating for typing because I’m stronger with dvorak now).

But sometimes instead it does the opposite and remaps the qwerty bindings to dvorak. As in, even if I swap layouts, wasd are all over the keyboard instead of all together. I need to exit the game, swap layouts to qwerty on the desktop, then relaunch for controls to work properly (and then I can sometimes swap back to dvorak in game and they continue to work). Often, the next time I launch the game, I’ll forget to switch it but it will just work this time.

And sometimes it behaves like windows did where I can swap the layout in game and keys change as you’d expect.

I have no idea why it’s inconsistent between these three options or where the “preserve key location despite the layout” feature is even coming from. Anyone have any idea about this?

I upgraded my gpu this weekend. Shut down, switched the psu off, swapped the old one out and new one in, booted into bios no issue (to check if I has left pcie on auto or needed to update it), then booted into the desktop (fedora cinnamon). Bam, after login only saw wallpaper, no mouse cursor or other UI.

Well, at least it’s kinda working. Time to figure out what’s going on. Terminal works. There’s some errors in the log but nothing to do with amdgpu or firmware failed to upload or anything. Software render just shows up as black screen. Reset my cinnamon session and boot back to the same thing. Fuck.

Then I try moving my mouse way over to the right and it shows up! Oh right. I have my TV plugged in for streaming to it sometimes and it ended up defaulted to the primary display, so my main desktop was only showing up there (and it was off). Right click, display properties, swap my monitor to primary, disable the TV until I turn it on.

This is about the magnitude of the average problem I need to deal with on Linux. Something isn’t working like I want it to, half the time it’s actually working but I misunderstood something or the default doesn’t match my intent and I need to adjust settings and then it’s perfect or close enough.

Or the other problem I had yesterday, tried monster hunter world for the first time and it wouldn’t launch. Played satisfactory for a bit instead (new gpu is noticeably smoother yay), then did a quick search, found that a specific version of proton works, switched to that version and it played. That’s the first game that has had such trouble for me.
