I hope Winston Churchill is English enough to quote.
Americans can always be trusted to do the right thing, once all other possibilities have been exhausted.
This account from 1946 says
Canada, of its own free will, entered the war in September 1939 because it then realized that Nazi Germany threatened the very existence of Western civilization.

Good point, actually.
Canada declared war on Germany in 1939, because it was the right thing to do.
The USA declared war on Japan two years later, the day after Pearl Harbor. Soon after, Germany and Italy declared war on the USA.
They didn’t mention it in the post I reacted to.

It’s both.
On the one hand it’s the leadership’s ineptitude and corruption making them fail at a lot of stuff.
On the other hand it’s the total disregard for their own people’s lives (and the sheer numbers) making them dangerous.

The are about 450 nuclear power plants in operation. The number of plants built did not come up in my searches, but let’s say it was double that.
There were three full and two partial meltdowns in nuclear power plants.
That leaves us with a 0.5% chance of a meltdown per reactor.
I know the calculation is extremely simplified, but the risk is still too high for me.
