Yup. I take the Martin Luther King Jr.'s "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.” quite seriously.
People try to counter with “but why do you care about something happening over there on the other side of the world.” Morality and ethics aside (I understand that this is a huge asterisk), even from a purely self-interested standpoint they clearly don’t understand the big picture.
then yes I think logically it would mean people funding the war crimes in any capacity would then be war criminals themselves
Maybe this is why so many Americans (including myself) are absolutely fucking furious and speaking out about Israel’s war crimes and America’s direct support of it. I don’t want to be complicit and want there to be zero confusion on this matter. I want to distance myself from it as much as possible.
Sex-selective infanticide, as seen under a one-child policy regime, would be a more clear-cut example of femicide.
From a quick search, viricide seems to mean “kills viruses” (as an alternate spelling of virucide) or killing one’s husband.
I would probably use the term androcide.
Even the term manslaughter. Though “man” is often meant to generically mean “human”, e.g. mankind or since the dawn of man.
felt more like an insult
I certainly use the term as a pejorative, hence the quotes in my original comment.
I was thinking on this some more, and another source that I didn’t mention was mycoprotein and other fungal proteins. These aren’t as common, but you could look for Quorn (note that many, but not all, of their products do contain egg) or Meati. Mushrooms have a good % of calories from protein, but they do tend to be rather expensive so really more of a way to round things out. Nutritional yeast is more of a seasoning than a food per se, but you might get a gram or 2 here and there. I put it on popcorn and mix into some sauces.
There are also some non-wheat grains that I would consider modest sources of protein: oats and quinoa. These aren’t heavy hitters and aren’t enough on their own but can help fill in the gaps and provide some variety. Oats at least are also very inexpensive.
It’s worth mentioning that I specifically avoided introducing myself using the “v-word” (vegan). Although I consider it to be the ideal to strive for, I take “don’t let perfect be the enemy of good” to heart and find that discussing a reduction in animal products to be a more approachable goal for many people. I’m not a dietician and won’t claim that everyone can make it work without animal proteins, particularly those with multiple allergies, unique requirements, or limitations on what food is actually available to them. From your earlier comment, I agree with your assessment on lab-grown meat and am a huge supporter of these technologies. You should know that lab-grown dairy protein (whey) already exists and is available in commercial products. I have had ice cream and cream cheese using this animal-free dairy protein.
I’m sorry if my previous comment came off a bit aggressive. I think I had misread your intent, but now it is clear that we are on the same page.
Would your post/comment history be lost as well? Will posts/comments show up as [by deleted user] or w/e?
They could shred clothing with their teeth though
Soy, in particular, is my single-biggest source. While wheat is used for some plant-based proteins, I would expect that a wheat sensitivity or allergy has broader implications beyond protein. Since I don’t need to avoid soy, I consume regular tofu. However they do make soy-free tofu from a variety of other sources, such as “pumfu” made from pumpkin seeds. I can’t attest to its taste, however.
In addition to soy, I lean heavily on beans (soy is a bean … so other types of beans) and lentils. Nuts and peanuts are also a good source of protein, but I can only consume limited quantities due to their high fat content which is a digestive issue for me. They do make a de-fatted peanut butter powder that you could probably mix into shakes and such; it has about 50% of calories from protein. Pea protein may be another option, but this might hit upon your limitations on beans and is also a processed food item.
Admittedly, allergies to soy and wheat and restriction on beans does kneecap you a bit. Is the issue with beans the fiber content? I’m just curious if this will spill over into other legumes such as lentils, peanuts, and pea protein.
You seem to be going out of your way to respond negatively to someone who is trying to do something. But you seem mistaken in thinking that I’m seeking some sort of approval.
No, I’m more interested in setting an example that others can follow. Are you familiar with the quote “be the change that you want to see”? I don’t tell people not to eat meat. I let my actions speak for me and simply show them that it can be done, and how to do it. This goes for other anticonsumption habits that I practice as well.
Pro-Israeli genociders to anyone who might take offense to genocide: “just lie back and let it happen”
We all share responsibility to take real action to focus our species on solutions to avoid mass suffering and death.
I do take some fairly serious steps towards anticonsumption and reducing my footprint, such as not eating meat. One of the steps I have taken to reduce the environmental damage that I cause is to not have children. This has an additional effect of preventing their suffering and death.
This seems to be perfectly in line with your stated goal.
If we pooled our resources into finishing that technology
If we could all just get together and do <whatever thing>, we’d be able to do it! I’ve found that relying on other people most often ends in disappointment. I know that’s cynical, but it’s also not inaccurate.
Sorry for trying to find some purpose in this crappy life in the form of nurturing and caring for another person.
I find purpose in helping those who already exist, in the service of preventing suffering.
